I started smoking cigars about 17 years ago. I remember just buying one at a
time. Then a few at a time, and storing them in a ziploc bag. Next step was
a small desktop humidor. Keeping the desktop properly humidified was not so
easy. Cigar humidification technology back then was not as good as it is
today. As my cigar collection grew, the age of the internet was growing, as
well as my collection. As my cigar obsession grew, so did the amount of
desktops and igloos that I needed to store my growing collection. Keeping
all my cigars at the proper humidity level was a daunting task, and even
kept me up at nite worrying if my cigars would be OK the next day (yes, I
was obsessed).
As my hobby and knowledge grew, pure luck had me meet face to face with who
I consider to be the best cigar cabinet humidor maker in the world. Matt
Allan had got his start making desktop humidors for the CAO cigar company.
As the Made in China desktop humidors flooded the market, Matts business
slowed down. Everyone was buying from China. Matt decided to use his
skills to make large furniture size cigar cabinets. Matts cabinet is made
in Nashville, TN. Its a simple but beautiful and well made cabinet. This
is a cabinet that is made by a craftsman who smokes cigars, and understands
how cigars should be stored. The door has foam and magnets that ensure a
tight seal. The construction is solid, and Matt makes them out of materials
that wont warp and split when exposed to the moist environment that our
cigars need. Shelves are heavy duty, and the singles drawer slides all the
way out so that you can reach your cigars. Prper airflow is designed into
the cabinet so that your humidity stays nice and even. The "made in china"
cabinets might look good, but there is very little effort put into design.
To me, the imported stuff is designed more like a kitchen cabinet, as
opposed to a properly designed humidor made by somebody who understands
cigar storage, and really cares that his customers cigars are well kept.
As good as Matts cabinets are made, his electronics are even better. Back
in the old days of electronics, Matt had to use a small electric room
humidifier for his cabinets. It worked, but was not very accurate. He
wished for better, but had no other choice. One day, Matt got lucky and was
introduced to an electronics engineer. They started talking about cigar
cabinets and humidification. Matt told him of the troubles with the old
fashioned room humidifiers. The final result of the meeting was that Matt
and the engineer designed the first electronic humidification system that
was made specifically for large cigar humidors. Sure there was a couple
ofhter systems out there, but they were not designed just for cigars, and
with features that would make our cigars smoke better. These other systems
were made for your bedroom or greenhouse, but not specifically for cigars.
What I like best about Avallo Humidors is that the product is made in the
USA. Matt understands everything about his products because he builds them
himself. He is the only person who can say that in the cigar cabinet
industry.
I was so impressed with Matt that I decided to become a dealer for Avallo
