Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Famous Smoke
Shop located 1100 Conroy Place Easton PA 18040.
I did so with my long time friend and smoking buddy
Tom O'Brian who is a regular there.
Famous is located in a large industrial complex and easily identified by huge letters on the side of the building. Tom had filled me in on the fact that the majority of the facility is dedicated to a warehouse where Famous runs their internet business.
When we pulled up outside, there were some tables and umbrellas set up and some customers outside enjoying some sticks.
The door was chocked open to take advantage of the nice weather. The shop is one big room with floor to ceiling humidors covering the perimeter of the shop. There were more humidor counters that the registers sit on. In the middle of the room was a large table surrounded by several high back leather chairs and a large comfortable leather couch.
Tom introduced me to David the shop manager. David said we were in luck because every Friday night is a pairing event where Famous gives you a free stick and an adult beverage. In return, they give you a little paper to fill out with your thoughts on the smoke. We were given a Rocky Patel Edge and an Avalanche beer. I had not yet smoked the Edge and was very pleased with it's peppery flavor. I also had my brother in law Jim with me. Jim had never smoked before, but decided to try it. The hook was set. Once David found out it was his first smoke, he told him to keep the Edge and try something mild to medium. The brand that David gave Jim eludes me at this time, but Jim smoked it and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.
There were quite a menagerie of characters around the table who were all very friendly. The shop was also provided pizza, but after about a half hour, someone was ordering BBQ and asked us if we wanted any. The openness of not only the shop, but the crowd, turned what was going to be us stopping in, into a three hour visit as I enjoyed three sticks.
Also behind the counter was Jonathan, although only 21 he seemed to be evolving into quite a tobacconist in his own right and was quick to offer advice and help.
Everyone of the sticks I smoked were well kept and had great draws. One gentleman complained about a stick being "musty". Jonathan was quick to take it and began to take it apart in attempt to find the cause. We joked that it was Tobacco CSI.
The three hours spent there felt more like an hour, but that is how it goes when you are in a shop with that garage type feeling.
For anyone in the area of Easton PA, don't let the size of Famous' facility fool you, the retail shop is as comfortable and cozy as they come.
